TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is preparing to receive a number of new major weapons systems, or alutsista (defense equipment). Several ships from abroad will soon land in Indonesian waters.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Ministry of Defense and the TNI attended a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives. The closed-door meeting discussed grants for defense and security equipment.

One of the items discussed was the agreement between the government and the House of Representatives to receive a grant worth 1.9 billion yen, equivalent to Rp 205 billion, for patrol boats.

"The nominal value, if shipped, would be approximately three or four patrol boats, 14 meters long, 5 meters wide, and with a speed of up to 40 knots," said Deputy Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto.

In addition to the patrol boats from the Japanese government, Indonesia will also acquire new vessels. Here is the list:

1. Indonesian Warship Canopus-936

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) received the Republic of Indonesia Warship, KRI Canopus-936, during a handover ceremony at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Germany on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The ship is part of the Ministry of Defense's ship procurement project.

The handover ceremony was led by Vice Chief of Naval Staff (Wakasal), Vice Admiral Erwin S. Aldedharma. The series of activities included shipnaming, delivery, commissioning, and the inauguration of the ship's commander.

"This ship will strengthen the Kotama Pushidrosal's capabilities in carrying out the fundamental functions of hydro-oceanographic survey operations and supporting search and rescue (SAR) operations and maritime security patrols," Erwin said in a press release, quoted on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

The ship will be commanded by Navy Colonel (P) Indragiri Yani Wardhono. The ship's construction took three years and is crewed by 93 personnel.

The KRI Canopus-936 is an Ocean-Going Hydro-Oceanographic Auxiliary Vessel (BHO). BHOs are Indonesian Navy auxiliary vessels tasked with conducting hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, including ocean mapping, measuring depth, currents, tides, and seabed characteristics to support safe navigation and military operations.

It is also equipped with a number of unmanned system technologies, including an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) (ZBoat), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) (Drone Lidar) and a Multibeam Echosounder. The ship is also armed with a 20-millimeter cannon and a 12.7-millimeter submachine gun.

2. KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321

The KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 warship officially began its voyage to Indonesia after departing from the Naval Base della Spezia, Italy, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. The departure of the Italian-built ship is part of the strengthening of the main weapons systems (alutsista) of the naval forces.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali estimates that the ship will arrive in Indonesia in early April. The KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 is under the command of Navy Colonel (P) Kurniawan Koes Atmadja.

Upon arrival in Indonesia, the KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 is planned to join its sister ship, the KRI Brawijaya-320, in Fleet Command II. The presence of this ship is expected to strengthen the Indonesian Navy's combat capabilities in safeguarding sovereignty and national interests in Indonesian waters.

3. Garibaldi Aircraft Carrier

The Indonesian Navy will receive a grant from the Italian government in the form of the Giuseppe Garibaldi. This weaponry system will be Indonesia's first aircraft carrier.

The 180.2-meter-long carrier has a speed of up to 30 knots, or approximately 56 kilometers per hour. It is equipped with an octuple Mk.29 launcher for Sea Sparrow/Selenia Aspide anti-aircraft missiles, twin Oto Melara 40L70 DARDO cannons, triple 324-millimeter torpedo tubes, and Otomat Mk 2 SSM anti-ship missiles.

The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is currently preparing a crew unit for the Garibaldi aircraft carrier. Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of the Defense Information Bureau of the Ministry of Defense's Secretariat General, stated that the ship's arrival schedule is still under discussion. The ship is currently undergoing technical readiness stages before sailing to Indonesia. One of these is the dismantling of certain equipment by the Italian Navy before it can sail home.

Rico stated that the aircraft carrier can, in principle, support the Indonesian Navy's duties, both in Military Operations for War and Military Operations Other Than War. "This includes humanitarian missions and disaster relief. However, the Indonesian Navy is still finalizing the crew and ship assignments," Rico said when confirmed on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
