TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A new earthquake has been recorded in Mindanao, southern Philippines, today, Monday, June 15, 2026. The tremor was recorded with a magnitude of 6.2 by both Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the US Geological Survey (USGS).
According to BMKG analysis, the tremor occurred offshore, 143 kilometers north of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a 93-kilometer depth. The earthquake originated 67 kilometers southeast of Pondaguitan on the coast of Davao Oriental, Philippines, according to the USGS.
"The earthquake was classified as medium, caused by the subduction of the Philippine Sea plate," explained Wijayanto, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG.
The quake was felt in Indonesia, in the Talaud and Sangihe Islands, at an intensity of MMI III, which people felt indoors, akin to a truck passing by.
BMKG's modeling did not show any potential for a tsunami due to the earthquake, in contrast with the 7.8 magnitude quake that struck Mindanao last week. At that time, the epicenter was located offshore, about 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim, Sarangani.
Following the powerful earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported about 6,000 aftershocks to date, with 78 of them were felt.

Citing a report from inquirer.net today, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 65 people, while 36 others remain missing and 1,400 are injured.
It has recently been revealed that the earthquake also caused the seabed to rise by up to two meters, as confirmed by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, and shown by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Soccsksargen. The raised seabed is predominantly located in the Pangyan Marine Sanctuary, Glan, Sarangani.
According to an official statement released on Sunday morning, June 14, the lifting has caused the coastline to expand by 200 meters. The new landmass revealed extensive coral reef and seaweed areas, along with marine life such as reef fish, eels, and clams.
The Cebu Daily News reported that experts have been on-site after it was reported on June 10 that the sea level there remained shallow and did not return to its original state after the earthquake, sending a tsunami to Indonesia (0.75 meters). A 1.4-meter tsunami hit the coast of Kiamba, Sarangani.
