TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police shot dead the suspect in the Saturday incident of vehicle ramming and stabbing in Berlin, Germany, on Sunday afternoon, July 26.
Police said the suspect was found around 6:00 p.m. local time in Berlin's Spandau district. According to initial findings, the suspect ran toward police officers while armed with a sharp weapon, prompting officers to open fire.
On Saturday evening, a van plowed into a crowd of people near Berlin's Tiergarten Park. The driver then attacked pedestrians with a weapon believed to be a machete, killing one woman and injuring 29 others.
The incident occurred near the city's Christopher Street Day pride parade.
Earlier on Sunday, July 26, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the incident was suspected to be an "Islamist terrorist attack."
The suspect, born in 2005, was a German citizen of Lebanese descent, the minister said, adding that he had a history of various crimes and showed signs of radicalization. The suspect was also previously sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison by a German court; however, the sentence was suspended with probation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the incident on the social media platform X, calling it an "attack on our society."
Citing DW, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Sunday was illuminated in the rainbow colors of the Pride flag, where hundreds of people gathered for a candlelit vigil for the victims of the attack. The site is located just a few hundred meters away from the deadly car ramming and stabbing that occurred the night before.
The projection on the famous landmark also included the slogan: "Berlin, city of freedom."
