Russia, China, France Block UN Security Council Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Russia, China, and France are reportedly blocking a UN Security Council resolution that would authorize the use of force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as quoted by Antara.

The New York Times, citing diplomatic sources and senior UN officials, reports that the draft resolution contains a clause authorizing member states to use various means to ensure freedom of navigation and prevent the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping traffic.

After weeks of closed-door negotiations, the proposal put forward by Bahrain and supported by Gulf states has entered its fourth revision.

Although a formal vote on the resolution is scheduled for Friday, it remains to be seen whether its supporters will secure the backing of Russia, China, and France, who have veto power.

According to diplomatic sources, differences of opinion occurred not only among the five permanent members, but also among the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets, including those in Tehran. The attacks caused damage and civilian casualties. In response, Iran attacked Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.

The escalation has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil and liquefied natural gas from the Gulf region to global markets. This has depressed energy exports and production while pushing up prices on international markets.
