TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called on ASEAN to expand partnerships with middle-power nations and countries in the Global South to strengthen regional resilience amidst mounting global challenges.

Anutin made these remarks while addressing the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on Tuesday, during his inaugural visit there as part of a two-day working visit to Indonesia.

Prime Minister Anutin said ASEAN of the future must advance three priorities, one of which is greater resilience. In his view, resilience no longer merely signifies the ability to recover from a crisis, but entails preparation before disruptions occur.

He noted that ASEAN needs to deepen integration and strengthen the foundations of security and prosperity by building trusted supply chains, reliable energy systems, security frameworks, digital connectivity, and technological capabilities.

However, he emphasized that resilience cannot be built in isolation.

Therefore, ASEAN needs to expand partnerships with middle-power nations and partners in the Global South.

He called for ASEAN to leverage its collective strengths and diversify cooperation to create more options and reduce over-reliance and maintain its strategic autonomy.

Anutin also championed ASEAN unity and centrality in the face of an increasingly fragmented world, underpinned by the bloc's ability to manage the plethora of challenges within the region.

"The principles of consensus and non-interference remain the cornerstone of ASEAN," he said, adding that these principles must be implemented with the flexibility and pragmatism needed to preserve unity while enabling meaningful action.

Anutin also emphasized that ASEAN's relevancy cannot be taken for granted; rather, it must be earned through constructive contributions to regional and global affairs.

According to him, ASEAN must remain a trusted platform where partners can engage constructively and develop mutually beneficial cooperation.
