TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UK's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has insisted he has no plans to call an early general election amid calls for the government to secure a fresh mandate from voters.
Burnham made the remarks in an interview with the Manchester Evening News after officially taking over as prime minister from Keir Starmer on Monday, citing ANTARA.
Earlier, UK Reform Party leader Nigel Farage called for Britain to hold elections. The call came after Burnham promised to bring about the "biggest change" in British politics and economics in 40 years.
Burnham said he would adhere to the 2024 manifesto, emphasizing that the country operates under a parliamentary democracy. He said the manifesto, drafted in 2024, would continue to guide his approach and decision-making.
When asked whether he planned to call an early election, Burnham said he would pursue his own approach while remaining within the framework of the 2024 manifesto. He added that his immediate priority was ensuring the country was governed effectively rather than focusing on an early vote.
Burnham believes that holding elections will actually delay important work that the government must immediately carry out.
However, some in the UK believe Burnham should have called a new election. They argue that, in the 2024 election, the public voted for a party that was led by a different leader at the time.
A survey conducted by Survation for the Daily Mail showed that 51 percent of respondents supported holding new elections.
