TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - English Premier League club Aston Villa emerged as champions of the 2025/26 Europa League after defeating German side Freiburg 3-0 in the final at Tupras Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, on Thursday.
Aston Villa's goals were scored by Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers.
This victory reaffirmed Unai Emery's reputation as a specialist in Europe's second-tier club competition, with five trophies won by three different clubs, according to UEFA's official website as cited by Antara.
Villa took the lead near the end of the first half through Tielemans in the 40th minute. The goal came from a corner kick after Lucas Digne's effort from the left was blocked by the Freiburg defense.
Morgan Rogers, taking the corner kick, sent a cross to the edge of the penalty area. Tielemans met the ball with a powerful volley that sailed into the bottom left corner of the Freiburg goal, leaving Noah Atubolu unable to anticipate. The score became 1-0.
Aston Villa nearly increased their lead with a similar move a few minutes later. Matty Cash's corner found Ezri Konsa at the far post, but the Villa defender couldn't direct the ball into the net despite being in a promising position.
The second goal finally arrived in first-half injury time. Buendia doubled Aston Villa's lead with an impressive individual effort in the 45+3 minute.
Receiving a pass from John McGinn on the edge of the left side of the penalty area, Buendia turned before unleashing a left-footed shot that found the top left corner of the net. The goal gave Aston Villa a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Into the second half, Freiburg attempted to rally to reduce the deficit. However, their pressure failed to break down Villa's solid defense.
Instead, Unai Emery's men were able to add another goal midway through the second half. Buendia's acceleration down the left flank ended with a low cross to the near post, which Rogers tapped in to make it 3-0.
The lead held until the end of the match, ensuring Aston Villa lifted the Europa League trophy this season.
