TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in San Francisco, United States, has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were victims in the shooting incident at the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD), California, on Monday, May 18, 2026.
In a written statement on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as quoted by Antara, the Cultural and Social Information Consul of KJRI San Francisco, Afina Burhanuddin, said that they continue to communicate with the Indonesian Muslim community to ensure the condition of its citizens following the incident.
She mentioned that the shooting occurred around 11:40 local time (Tuesday, 01:40 Indonesian time) and resulted in the deaths of five people, including a security officer and two suspects aged 17 and 18.
According to Afina, the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, and local authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the case.
"However, the San Diego Police Department suspects that this attack is related to a hate crime against the Muslim community," she said.
She added that the case has received attention from both the U.S. federal government and the state government.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that three of the deceased were males.
He mentioned that they are coordinating with the federal investigative agency, the FBI, to handle the case.
According to Wahl, the investigation will focus on the suspicion of a hate crime because the location of the incident is at the center of Islamic activities.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump referred to the incident as a "terrible situation."
Trump stated that federal and state officials are investigating the case and gathering additional information.
"I've been given some early updates, but we're going to be going back and looking at it very strongly," said Trump, as quoted by Anadolu.
ICSD is the largest mosque in San Diego and is located approximately 15 kilometers from the city center.
