Fact Check: Viral Claim of BSI System Shutdown on May 13-17 is False

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A chain message claiming that Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) will shut down its banking system is circulating on WhatsApp on May 13, 2026. The narrative claims that BSI will be unable to serve customers temporarily.

The service shutdown is claimed to take place from May 13, 2026, at 5:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) to May 17, 2026, for system updates. The message also encourages customers to immediately withdraw or transfer their balances from their savings accounts at BSI.

Tempo has received a reader request to verify the narrative. However, is it true that BSI is updating its system, necessitating a four-day shutdown?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the news through BSI's official communication channels and customer interviews. The results showed that BSI never announced a system shutdown from May 13 to 17, 2026.

In a direct message on Instagram, the bank's management stated there were no plans to shut down the system. BSI emphasized that any plans impacting services would be announced via its official website and social media.

"We would like to inform you that the information circulating is not true," BSI wrote to Tempo on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

To date, no announcement of a system outage has been found on BSI's official website or social media accounts.

Lutfia Isfahani, a BSI customer in Banyuwangi, East Java, said she was still able to access BSI Bank services on May 13 at 5:43 PM WIB. Although she experienced some issues logging in, services returned to normal shortly thereafter.

"Everything is fine, including checking my balance. I can still check my balance this afternoon," Lutfia told Tempo.

CONCLUSION

Tempo's verification concluded that the claim that BSI shut down the system during the update period from May 13 to 17, 2026, is false.
