Narendra Modi to Visit Indonesia on July 7-8: What Are the Agendas?

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a two-day visit to Indonesia from July 7 to 8, 2026. Scheduled to arrive on July 6, Modi's trip is reciprocal to Prabowo's visit to India in January last year as the honored guest at the country's 76th Independence Day in New Delhi.

Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Shri Sandeep Chakravorty, said that Modi will be in Jakarta and Yogyakarta before continuing his trip to Australia. Modi's visit, he said, is expected to serve as a momentum to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and India, which has been established for 76 years.

Talks on Defense, Trade, and Downstreaming

Sandeep said that the meeting between Modi and Prabowo will discuss at least five pillars of cooperation: defense and security, trade and investment, food security, energy security, downstreaming projects and critical minerals, as well as capacity building in the health and education sectors.

"Discussions will certainly cover defense and security issues. We share the same maritime space and are maritime neighbors," said Sandeep during a media briefing in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The talks will also touch trade and investment matters since both countries are major trading nations, Sandeep added.

Several MoUs Prepared

Sandeep said the visit agenda will kick off on July 7 with a bilateral meeting between Modi and Prabowo, followed by a state banquet. In the evening, Modi is scheduled to attend a meeting with the Indian community in Indonesia.

The next day, Modi will depart for Yogyakarta before continuing his trip to Australia.

In addition to discussing various bilateral, regional, and global issues, the two countries are also preparing several memorandums of understanding (MoUs). Ongoing cooperation covers healthcare, space, science and technology, education, pharmaceuticals, food security, and downstreaming.

According to Sandeep, some MoUs are prepped for signing, while others are still in the process of completion, and some may not be finalized before the visit.

However, Sandeep said the agenda is still subject to change. He explained that the visit to Yogyakarta is linked to the commitments agreed upon in the 2025 Joint Statement.

"The two leaders have agreed that India will support the restoration efforts of the Prambanan Temple. Since then, we have been working with the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, the Indonesian Heritage Institute, as well as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)," he added.
