TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has denied rumors that the recent rolling blackouts across Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Greater Jakarta/Jabodetabek) were triggered by dwindling coal stocks.

"There is no coal shortage," the ESDM Ministry spokesperson Dwi Anggia told Antara in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11.

Anggia explained that the rolling blackouts affecting the Greater Jakarta area were caused entirely by technical issues. Regarding the ongoing disruption, she stated that the government has coordinated closely with state electricity firm PLN to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

"If there are rumors circulating that there will be more blackouts, that is simply not true. It is definitely not true," Anggia emphasized.

She also noted that while the coal production Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) is still being processed, national coal reserves remain perfectly stable. "Moreover, Pak Minister (Bahlil Lahadalia) has clearly stated that there will be a gradual relaxation regarding this budget," he added.

Rolling Blackouts Across Greater Jakarta, Java

This clarification comes in response to widespread power outages experienced by residents across the Greater Jakarta area, which have persisted for a week with varying durations.

Outside the capital region, citizens have also voiced complaints over blackouts hitting parts of Cianjur in West Java, Semarang in Central Java, Madura in East Java, and several other provinces.

Amid these persistent blackouts, speculation surfaced suggesting that the power grid failures were the result of a severe coal supply crisis hitting domestic coal-fired power plants (PLTU).

Addressing the coal supply chain, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the government will loosen coal production quotas following a price surge triggered by the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
