TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Ministry for Food Security has announced that Indonesia will not import rice for either consumption or industrial use, saying all domestic needs can be met through local production.

“Everything can be fulfilled through self-sufficiency,” said Tatang Yuliono, Deputy for Trade and Distribution Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Security, at Graha Mandiri in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

Tatang made the statement after a ministerial coordination meeting at the ministry’s office, which was attended by Coordinating Minister for Food Security Zulkifli Hasan, Trade Minister Budi Santoso, Central Statistics Agency (BPS) head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, and other senior officials.

He said the Ministry of Industry had proposed importing 380,952 tons of rice for industrial use next year. However, the proposal was rejected during the meeting, as the government believes domestic production will be sufficient to meet industrial rice demand in 2026.

Tatang also emphasized that Indonesia will not allow rice imports for household consumption. The policy, he said, applies nationwide, including in free trade zones such as Sabang in Aceh.

“It is not permitted. Essentially, Indonesia is self-sufficient in rice, and there will be absolutely no imports for consumption,” he said.

Tatang added that the government will hold another commodity balance meeting next week to further discuss food import policies for 2026. The meeting, he said, will be postponed until the Minister of Industry and the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries are able to attend.
