TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, has announced that 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 Hijri falls on Monday, May 18, 2026, meaning Eid al-Adha will be observed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
"Based on the results of the lunar month calculations and reports, it has been agreed that 1 Zulhijah 1447 Hijri falls on Monday, May 18, 2026, so Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026," said Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar when presenting the results of the Isbat meeting in Jakarta on Sunday, May 17, as reported by Antara.
The decision was reached following crescent moon sightings (rukyatul) conducted across 88 different locations in Indonesia.
Based on these monitoring results, the crescent moon exceeded the criteria set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS) for the new Hijri month, which requires a moon altitude of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees.
The Minister of Religious Affairs stated that this decision resulted from the rukyatul hilal report presented at the isbat meeting, which involved scholars, community organization figures, astronomy experts, and other community leaders.
He said the data was synchronized with the hisab method, mathematical and astronomical calculations, compiled by the Ministry’s Rukyat Team some time ago.
Previously, Muhammadiyah, using the Single Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT), also determined that Eid al-Adha, 10 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 H, falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Meanwhile, the Day of Arafah, or 9 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 H, falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, with the month of Dhul-Hijjah beginning on Monday, May 18, 2026.
This determination is based on global astronomical calculations using the Global Calendar Parameters (PKG), a system designed to ensure uniformity in the start of the Hijri month for Muslims worldwide.
In this system, determining the start of the month no longer depends on national borders but instead utilizes the principle of global crescent visibility.
