TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Defense has proposed a 2027 budget of Rp667 trillion (US$40.9 billion), far exceeding the government's indicative allocation of Rp139 trillion, prompting the ministry to seek additional funding through the House of Representatives.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said the proposed budget was formulated based on the country's defense priorities and evolving strategic needs.
“Therefore, for 2027, we have proposed a budget of Rp667 trillion,” Sjafrie told reporters after a closed-door meeting with House Commission I, which oversees defense and foreign affairs, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
The meeting discussed the 2027 Work Plan and Budget (RKA) and Government Work Plan (RKP) for the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian Military (TNI).
Sjafrie said defense spending requirements are dynamic and tend to increase as Indonesia seeks to strengthen its national defense capabilities and safeguard sovereignty.
However, the government's indicative budget ceiling for the ministry stands at only Rp139 trillion.
“We must follow the directives issued by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and the Ministry of Finance,” he said.
Request of additional budget
To narrow the gap, the ministry has requested an additional Rp195 trillion through House Commission I for further deliberation by the parliamentary Budget Committee.
According to Sjafrie, the additional funding is needed not only for military readiness but also to support the TNI's non-combat roles, including disaster response and infrastructure development.
“The national defense system serves as a safety belt for the continuity of national development,” he said.
House Commission I chair Utut Adianto said the commission supports the ministry's request and has agreed to forward the proposal to the Budget Committee for further discussion.
Utut noted that the indicative budget for 2027 is lower than the ministry's 2026 allocation of Rp187 trillion.
“Commission I approves and supports the proposed additional funding to be forwarded to the Budget Committee,” he said.
