TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's state energy firm PT Pertamina (Persero) says it will assess the compatibility of Russian crude oil with its refining system, following country’s plan to explore oil purchases from Russia.
Pertamina’s Vice President for Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, said the company would first study the characteristics of Russian crude before determining whether it can be processed efficiently at its refineries.
“We will examine the crude specifications. With ongoing refinery modernization, Pertamina is expected to gain greater flexibility to process a wider range of crude types in the future,” Baron said on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He added that Pertamina would proceed in line with government directives and prevailing regulations, noting that discussions on potential imports remain at the state level.
“Exploration is still being conducted by the government. As a state-owned enterprise responsible for national energy, Pertamina will follow up in accordance with official instructions and regulations,” he said.
Baron emphasized that the company remains open to various forms of cooperation to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of Indonesia’s energy supply, while continuing to prioritize prudence, regulatory compliance, and sound commercial and operational considerations.
Earlier, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said talks between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin had covered concrete energy cooperation aligned with national interests.
According to Bahlil, potential collaboration includes refinery development, expanded oil trade, and increased use of energy technologies.
“In the long term, Indonesia is also opening opportunities for cooperation in clean energy as part of efforts to support energy diversification,” he said.
Bahlil noted that ongoing volatility in global energy markets has affected supply stability in many countries, including Indonesia. To safeguard national energy security, the government is pursuing strategic measures, including exploring partnerships with major energy producers such as Russia.
