Poll: 61% of Americans Say War with Iran Was a Mistake

5 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A majority of Americans believe the US war with Iran is a mistake, according to a new poll released on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Based on a Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos survey, as reported by Al Jazeera, 61 percent of Americans say the military action against Iran is the wrong move, while only 36 percent say it was the right decision.

The poll is the latest to show low levels of support for the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of thousands across the Middle East and pushed global energy prices higher following a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to Iran.

These concerns come at a time when President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have fallen to a new low, with voters expressing frustration over economic issues and the cost of living.

The war is also seen as contradicting Trump’s pledge to avoid unnecessary foreign wars. The poll shows 46 percent of respondents say the decision to attack Iran is inconsistent with his stance during his presidential campaign.

Furthermore, fewer than two in ten respondents believe US actions in Iran have been successful.

The survey also shows that around four in ten respondents consider the operation unsuccessful, while another four in ten say it is “too early to tell.”

The Washington Post said the war in Iran is “as unpopular among Americans as the Iraq War at the peak of violence in 2006, and the Vietnam War in the early 1970s.”

Nevertheless, support for the war among Republican voters remains high, with 79 percent saying the attack was the right decision.

In addition, most Americans believe US military action against Iran carries several potential risks.

Among them, 61 percent of respondents say it will increase the risk of terrorism targeting Americans, 60 percent believe it raises the likelihood of the US economy falling into recession, and 56 percent say it risks weakening US relations with allied countries.
