TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has instructed Housing and Urban Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait to build official residences for judges across Indonesia as part of efforts to improve judicial welfare and strengthen anti-corruption measures.
Speaking at the Attorney General’s Office complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Prabowo said Indonesia currently has around 8,900 judges, a number he believes the government can accommodate with proper housing facilities.
“There are only around 8,900 judges, so I believe we can provide decent official residences for them,” Prabowo said, as broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
The president said that despite recent salary increases for judges, existing housing allowances remain inadequate, especially considering judges are frequently reassigned to different regions during their careers.
“I have instructed the housing minister to build official residences for all judges,” Prabowo said. “Even though their salaries have increased significantly, their monthly housing allowance is only around Rp1.5 million, while many judges are required to relocate between districts and provinces.”
Prabowo also said he recently learned that judges in Indonesia now earn higher salaries than their counterparts in Malaysia, based on information conveyed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Sunarto.
“Last week, the Chief Justice told me he had attended a meeting of ASEAN chief justices. The Chief Justice of Malaysia reportedly said he admired Indonesia because, for the first time, Indonesian judges now earn more than Malaysian judges,” Prabowo said.
He added that the salaries of junior judges in Indonesia are now nearly double those of junior judges in Malaysia.
Prabowo also urged officials in the executive and legislative branches not to be envious of the government’s recent judicial salary increases, which he said reached up to 280 percent under his administration.
“One of our first steps was raising judges’ salaries by nearly 300 percent. I wanted 300 percent, but the finance minister agreed to 280 percent,” he said.
According to Prabowo, improving judges’ welfare through higher salaries and official housing is necessary to reduce the risk of corruption within the judiciary.
“I believe corruption and injustice must be resolved within the judicial system,” he said. “That is why judges must be respected, selected carefully, and given sufficient income so they cannot be bribed.”
