TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Qatari Defense Minister Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. Sheikh Saoud, who also serves as the Vice Prime Minister of Qatar, paid a visit to the Palace on Monday, June 1, 2026.
Prabowo personally welcomed Sheikh Saoud upon his arrival. "Sheikh Saoud conveyed a special message from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to President Prabowo," as stated in the Presidential Secretariat's announcement.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed several issues, particularly the Indonesia-Qatar cooperation in various sectors. Previously, in April 2025, President Prabowo and the Emir of Qatar witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), "Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Dialogue between the Government of Indonesia and the Government of the State of Qatar."
The goal of this strategic dialogue is to promote more intensive cooperation in various fields, including politics, international and regional issues, defense and security, counterterrorism, the economy (especially trade and investment), cultural exchange, and strengthening inter-societal relations.
Prabowo received Sheikh Saoud on Monday afternoon. Earlier that morning, the President led the commemoration ceremony of Pancasila Day at the Pancasila Building Field, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taman Pejambon Street, Jakarta.
On this occasion, the head of state acted as the ceremony's inspector. Pancasila Day 2026 carries the theme "Pancasila Unites the Nation, Foundation of World Peace." The theme emphasizes the relevance of Pancasila's values in maintaining national unity and creating world peace.
In his speech during the ceremony, Prabowo emphasized that Pancasila is the guiding principle for the Indonesian people amid a world situation divided by conflict, competition, and trade wars at the global level.
"Amid a world increasingly divided by conflicts, geopolitical rivalries, trade wars, and economic uncertainties, Indonesia has a strong principle. That principle is Pancasila," said Prabowo.
