Singaporeans on MV Hondius Test Negative for Hantavirus

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Singapore residents aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by hantavirus have tested negative for the rare respiratory disease. This was revealed in a report by CNA on Saturday, May 9, 2026, citing the Singapore Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA).

The two men, aged 65 and 67, had been on the cruise ship during the Andes hantavirus outbreak. They were also on the same April 25 flight with a confirmed hantavirus patient from St. Helena to Johannesburg who later died in South Africa.

The Dutch woman, suspected to be the primary hantavirus case, did not travel to Singapore.

The CDA stated that laboratory testing on several samples from the two men found no evidence of hantavirus infection, including the specific Andes virus strain.

Still in Isolation

As a precautionary measure, the two men remain isolated at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases after arriving in Singapore on May 2 and May 6, respectively. Authorities stated they will undergo a 30-day quarantine from their last date of exposure, followed by additional testing before being released.

The agency added that the men will remain under telephone surveillance for a total 45-day monitoring period, which aligns with the maximum incubation period for hantavirus exposure.

"The risk to the general public in Singapore remains low," the CDA remarked, adding that authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.

The outbreak involving the Andes hantavirus strain has so far resulted in six confirmed cases, including three deaths, among passengers associated with the cruise, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The MV Hondius, carrying approximately 150 passengers and crew from 23 nationalities, departed from Argentina and crossed the Atlantic before reporting several cases of respiratory illness while sailing off the coast of Cape Verde.
