TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded a significant increase in the visits of foreign and domestic tourists in March 2026.
Deputy of Distribution and Service Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, revealed that the number of foreign tourist visits in March 2026 reached 1.09 million, an increase of 10.50 percent compared to the same period the previous year.
Cumulatively, from January to March 2026, the number of foreign tourist visits amounted to 3.44 million visits, or an 8.62 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025 (year-on-year).
"The visits of foreign tourists from January to March 2026 are the highest achievement since 2020," said Ateng in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Based on nationality, tourists from Malaysia still make up the largest group of visitors to Indonesia, with 186,530 visits accounting for 17.14 percent of all foreign tourists.
Ateng said that there was a sharp increase in both foreign and domestic tourist movements. The BPS recorded that the number of domestic tourist trips in March 2026 was 126.34 million, which is a 42.10 percent increase from March 2025.
From January to March 2026, the total number of domestic tourist trips reached 319.51 million, which is a 13.14 percent increase from the same period the previous year.
According to him, this surge is in line with the increased mobility of the public during the Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri period, and it was noted that the number of passengers increased for all modes of transportation during that period.
He stated that the highest number of passengers was recorded in train transportation with 48.14 million people, an increase of 17.76 percent compared to March 2025. Meanwhile, domestic air transport served 5.62 million passengers, a 32.35 percent increase.
An increase also occurred in domestic sea transport, reaching 3.12 million passengers, which is a 26.72 percent increase. Additionally, international air travel increased by 8.14 percent, reaching 1.54 million passengers. Meanwhile, there was a 72.73 percent surge in ferry transportation, with a total of 7.06 million passengers.
