TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump cancelled the planned dispatch of his envoys for talks with Iran in Pakistan. The decision was made after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi left Islamabad, which had hosted previous talks between Washington and Tehran.

According to Al Jazeera report, Trump told Fox News that he had instructed special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner not to continue their journey to the capital of Pakistan. He deemed the visit unnecessary despite having previously mentioned Iran's offer to resolve the two-month conflict.

“I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18-hour flight to go there. We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18-hour flights to sit around talking about nothing,” Trump stated.

He also added through social media that the communication line remains open. “If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!” he wrote.

Araghchi Continues Diplomatic Tour

Meanwhile, Araghchi has left Islamabad on Saturday, as confirmed by the Iranian government's media outlet, Press TV. During his visit to Pakistan, he met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief Asim Munir, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The visit was part of a three-nation tour, which also included Oman and Russia. In his statement in X, Araghchi mentioned that he had conveyed Iran's stance regarding the framework for permanently ending the war with Iran to Pakistani officials. But he said Iran has "yet to see if the US is truly serious about diplomacy."

Pakistan Acts as Mediator between Iran and the U.S.

According to the IRNA news agency, Araghchi is scheduled to return to Pakistan after completing his visit to Oman before continuing his journey to Russia. IRNA also reported, citing the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that some delegation members have returned to Tehran for consultation and guidance on efforts to end the war before rejoining in Islamabad.

Pakistan has been acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington amidst escalating tensions since the conflict began on February 28, 2026. The first round of negotiations in Islamabad two weeks ago did not yield an agreement, although Pakistan had previously successfully mediated a two-week ceasefire on April 8, which was then extended by Trump.
