TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Prosecutor has demanded a strict punishment for the Indonesian former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Makarim, for his alleged involvement in the corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) for the 2020-2022 fiscal year. The Public Prosecutor believes that Nadiem has committed corruption offenses together with other defendants, namely Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, Sri Wahyuningsih, and Jurist Tan.
"I demand that the panel of judges declare the defendant, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of committing corruption offenses together," said prosecutor Roy Riady at the Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
The prosecutor is convinced that Nadiem violated Article 603 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP). Nadiem has been charged with violating Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Law on the Eradication of Corruption Crimes in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) point 1 of the Criminal Code. He has been accused of enriching himself with an amount of Rp 809.59 million. He is also accused of enriching 12 private vendor companies of Chromebooks.
18-Year Prison Sentence Demand
According to the prosecutor, Nadiem has been proven to have caused state losses amounting to Rp2.18 trillion. This figure consists of Rp1.56 trillion from the procurement of Chromebook laptops according to the State Audit Board (BPKP), as well as US$44.054 million (US$44,054,426) or the equivalent of Rp621.38 billion (based on the lowest exchange rate from August 2020 to December 2022) due to the procurement of Chrome Device Management.
In his demand, the prosecutor has requested the panel of judges to impose an 18-year prison sentence on Nadiem. "Imposing a sentence on the defendant, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, with a prison sentence of 18 years for that reason," said Roy.
Rp1 Billion Fine Demand
In addition to the prison sentence, the prosecutor has also demanded that Nadiem pay a fine of Rp1 billion. If Nadiem fails to fulfill this within the specified period, this demand will be replaced with a 190-day or 6.2-month prison sentence.
Rp5.6 Trillion Compensation Demand
Not stopping there, the prosecutor has also demanded that Nadiem Makarim pay compensation amounting to Rp5.6 trillion. This amount consists of compensation of Rp809 billion (Rp809,596,125,000) and Rp4.8 trillion (Rp4,871,469,603,758), totaling Rp5.6 trillion (Rp5,681,066,728,758).
Regarding this demand, the prosecutor stated that Nadiem's assets could be seized and auctioned to cover the compensation. However, if the amount is not paid, the prosecutor said that it will be replaced with a 9-year imprisonment sentence.
