TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that as of Saturday morning, August 15, two people had died following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, stated in Jakarta on Saturday that both fatalities occurred in the El Say Port area of Sikka Regency.

"Based on preliminary reports, the earthquake affected the El Say Port area in Sikka Regency. The incident resulted in two deaths, one man and one woman, while one person sustained injuries," he said.

He explained that the tectonic quake, originating at a depth of 15 kilometers, was centered at sea, 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, at 4:58 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Saturday.

Strong tremors were felt for approximately one minute across Nagekeo, Sikka, and West Manggarai on Flores, with shaking extending to Bima in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and several districts in South Sulawesi, including Jeneponto, the Selayar Islands, and Maros.

Responding to the potential threat and a tsunami warning from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), alongside a joint team comprising the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the military (TNI), and the police (Polri), immediately directed coastal evacuations and provided medical treatment to victims.

Berton added that several aftershocks were recorded following the main quake, including a magnitude 6.2 tremor at 5:13 a.m. WIB and another magnitude 6.2 shock at 5:28 a.m. WIB.

Although authorities initially flagged a potential tsunami threat across NTT, NTB, and South Sulawesi, the BMKG officially lifted the early warning at 7:30 a.m. WIB.

Nevertheless, the BNPB urged the public, especially those in coastal areas, to remain calm, stay away from cracked or damaged buildings, and strictly follow evacuation instructions from field officers.
