TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several flights from El Tari International Airport in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, to airports in Flores have been canceled, and several others are still awaiting operational confirmation after an earthquake struck the Flores region on Saturday morning.
Teguh Darmawan Saiman, General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (Persero), the state-owned airport operator, at El Tari International Airport in Kupang, confirmed on Saturday that the facilities, main equipment, and flight operational support at the airport are in good condition and unaffected by the earthquake.
"However, the situation is different at several destination airports. Airport conditions in Ruteng and Ende are still being verified, so there's a chance flights will be cancelled," he said.
He stated that Wings Air has requested cancellations for flights IW 1831 and IW 1957, bound for Ende from Kupang.
As a result, 126 passengers lost their seats on the flight, and Wings Air has pledged refunds to affected passengers.
Meanwhile, airports in Larantuka, Lembata, Tambolaka, Alor, Maumere, and Labuan Bajo have all been confirmed to be operating normally, so flights from Kupang are still available.
"For flights to Bajawa, the airport is still coordinating to confirm the operational status of the destination airport," he said.
PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia urges prospective passengers to continue monitoring the latest information from airlines regarding flight schedules, as cancellation decisions are at the airline's discretion, taking into account operational conditions and flight safety and security aspects.
