
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government extended its condolences to the government and people of Qatar on the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013.
"The Government of the Republic of Indonesia extends its deepest condolences on the passing of His Highness, the Father Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on social media X on Sunday, as quoted by ANTARA.
Indonesia specifically conveyed its condolences to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is also Sheikh Hamad's son, all members of the Al Thani royal family, the Qatari government, and the Qatari people.
Amiri Diwan, the administrative office of the Emir of Qatar, has confirmed the news of Sheikh Hamad's death at 74.
"With hearts steadfast in faith in God's decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great loss to the nation of the late-may God have mercy on him-His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning, 27 Muharram 1448 AH, corresponding to 12 July 2026, at the age of nearly 74," said the office's statement on the X platform.
Sheikh Hamad is considered the founder of modern Qatar and remains influential and beloved in his country, even after handing over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim.
The Qatari government has declared four days of mourning to commemorate the death of Sheikh Hamad. "Public mourning throughout the State for the nation’s great departed leader, His Highness The Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, may Allah forgive him, for a period of four days, starting today," the Qatari government said in a statement.
The late emir of Qatar will be laid to rest at a cemetery in Lusail, with the funeral ceremony taking place on Sunday after Maghrib prayers local time.
Sheikh Tamim is scheduled to receive condolences from heads of state, members of the royal family, and the public on July 13-15.
