TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is optimistic that the Indonesian cooperative movement will rise and become a major force in the national economy by strengthening the people's economy starting from the villages.
In his speech at the peak of the 79th National Cooperative Day (Harkopnas) Commemoration at the Indonesia Arena, Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, on Sunday, Prabowo said that cooperatives would be an important tool for ensuring that the flow of the economy provides direct benefits to people.
"The Indonesian cooperative movement will rise to become an economic force in Indonesia, an economic force that will not take money away from Indonesia," said Prabowo, as quoted by ANTARA.
Prabowo said the government wants to build an economic system that brings prosperity to farmers, fishermen, and laborers. He believes that strengthening cooperatives will encourage economic activity to grow from villages and sub-districts to districts, allowing local communities to directly enjoy the benefits.
He believes that so far some of the wealth generated by the people has not been fully returned to them. Therefore, the government is trying to strengthen cooperatives so that the benefits of economic development are increasingly felt at the grassroots level.
However, President Prabowo emphasized that strengthening cooperatives does not mean the government is ignoring the role of other business actors. He stated that Indonesia needs all economic elements to drive national growth.
"Let me remind you, we are not against large companies. Because Indonesia is a large country, we need cooperatives, we need MSMEs, we need the private sector, we need SOEs (State-Owned Enterprises), and ROEs (Regional-Owned Enterprises). We need them all," he explained.
The Head of State explained that, as part of the Indonesia Incorporated concept, all economic actors must strengthen each other. This concept prioritizes synergy between cooperatives, MSMEs, private companies, SOEs, and ROEs.
He also stated that cooperatives are one of the pillars of the national economy, as envisioned by the nation's founders. Therefore, strengthening cooperatives must go hand in hand with strengthening other economic sectors.
"Strengthening cooperatives doesn't mean weakening others. No, we're strengthening all of them. Brothers and sisters, Indonesia is rich, Indonesia will rise, and Indonesia will be able to strengthen all the forces within the Republic of Indonesia," he concluded.
