TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, has hinted at a potential increase in the cost of organizing the pilgrimage for hajj (BPIH) in 2027. However, Irfan has not disclosed the exact amount of the potential increase.
"There's a high possibility of a hike in Hajj costs, but we will strive to ensure that if there is an increase, it will not burden our pilgrims," he said at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
According to Irfan, this potential increase is triggered by the rising components of Hajj costs, including avtur prices, set service tariffs by the Saudi Arabian government, and the weakening value of the Indonesian rupiah against the US dollar.
He mentioned that the Saudi Arabian government has also upgraded Category D services to Category C, subsequently increasing the Hajj service fees. In the future, the government will discuss the guidelines for determining BPIH and the travel cost of the pilgrimage with the House of Representatives' Commission VIII, which is a working partner of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
Separately, the Chair of DPR's Commission VIII, Marwan Dasopang, stated that the potential increase in Hajj costs is a difficult factor to avoid due to the surge in prices of various components. This politician from the National Awakening Party acknowledged that the future challenges will not be easy.
"The cost of Hajj is likely to increase. This is a challenge that we must collectively address to the Indonesian people," Marwan said after attending the 2026 national pilgrimage evaluation meeting in Jakarta on Saturday, July 3, as stated by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah press release.
According to Marwan, uncontrollable components such as flight costs pose a challenge in maintaining BPIH. He claimed that they will seek the best solution to not burden the pilgrims.
"Commission VIII, along with the Ministry of Hajj, will review all cost components. If it is still possible to maintain them, we will certainly strive to do so," Marwan added.
The 2026 Cost of Hajj Pilgrimage (BPIH) amounts to Rp87.4 million per pilgrim, which is a decrease of Rp2 million compared to the Rp89.4 million BPIH in 2025. The determination of this year's BPIH was agreed upon by the government and the DPR in a working meeting on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
