TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, referred to Indonesia as the primary destination for South Korean companies' investments. According to President Lee, Indonesia is also a valuable partner for the defense industry in the Land of Ginseng.

Lee made this statement during a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at Cheong Wa Dae, the Blue House, the nickname for the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Korea.

President Lee mentioned that Indonesia and South Korea have special meanings to each other and complement each other in various fields of cooperation. Lee also highlighted the two countries' successful cooperation, including their joint efforts in developing electric vehicles.

"Indonesia is the first destination for Korean companies' investments and a valuable partner that has helped realize Korea's defense industry. In addition, the first electric vehicle in Indonesia is also produced in collaboration with Korean companies," President Lee said on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, cited from the Presidential Secretariat.

According to Lee, Prabowo's state visit was a momentum to elevate the relationship to a special comprehensive strategic partnership. The two heads of state last met in Gyeongju, South Korea, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) High-Level Conference in 2025.

Lee stated that in their last meeting, he and Prabowo were committed to enhancing bilateral relations to the highest level.

"During President Prabowo's state visit to Korea, it is very meaningful that we will achieve historic results by elevating our bilateral relationship to a special comprehensive strategic partnership, and the Republic of Korea has only one relationship like this with any country in the world," President Lee said.

Likewise, Lee conveyed that Indonesia and South Korea have taken strong initial steps in various sectors of cooperation and are continuously expanding their partnership. He is optimistic that the two countries can create more future projects.

Lee stated that for over 50 years, since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Indonesia and South Korea have become trusted friends.

"And valuable partners in the journey together, guiding and supporting each other based on their respective strengths, wisdom, and mutual trust. Amid global uncertainties and various challenges, Korea and Indonesia are blessings to each other," Lee said.

Lee also expressed his appreciation for Prabowo's visit. He hoped that the relationship between the two countries would become even closer and bring greater benefits to both nations.

At the same time, President Prabowo emphasized that his inaugural state visit to South Korea reflected Indonesia's commitment to strengthening the existing partnership. For the Head of State, his visit to the Land of Ginseng is significant. "I consider Korea as a close friend of Indonesia, and I want to enhance this cooperation," said Prabowo.

Prabowo highlighted that long-term relations between countries are not devoid of various dynamics, including potential differences in views. Nevertheless, he sees openness and honesty as the key to maintaining constructive relations.

According to the Chairperson of the Gerindra Party, Indonesia and the Republic of Korea have common interests, especially as countries in the Pacific region and oriented towards trade. "We need good relations for the economic prosperity of both our countries, and perhaps we complement each other," he said.
