TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is preparing a work-from-home (WFH) policy for Indonesian civil servants as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption amid soaring global oil prices triggered by the war in the Middle East. The regulation is expected to be issued after the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the fuel-saving measure was discussed during a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
According to Airlangga, one of the government’s proposed measures is to cut office attendance and working hours to reduce fuel use.
“Efficiency in working hours will be needed, and flexibility for work from home will be introduced,” Airlangga told reporters at the palace.
He said the WFH policy is still being drafted, with the current plan allowing employees to work from home one day per week.
Airlangga said the policy would initially apply to civil servants (ASN) at both the central and regional levels, while the government also hopes private companies will adopt similar arrangements.
“This is expected not only for civil servants, but also for the private sector and regional governments,” he said.
He added that the draft regulation is likely to be finalized after the 1447 Hijri Eid al-Fitr holiday. Once the policy framework is complete, the government will announce the details to the public.
Airlangga, however, did not specify when the regulation would take effect.
“After Eid, but we will determine the timing later,” said the former Golkar Party chairman.
He also said the WFH arrangement could continue if global oil prices remain volatile.
“Later, we will see the situation, the oil price situation, the war situation. So, we follow the developing situation,” Airlangga said.
Prabowo had earlier called for nationwide fuel conservation in response to volatile oil prices and concerns over crude supply disruptions caused by the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Global oil prices have surged since the escalation of the Middle East conflict, prompting the Indonesian government to consider preventive measures to reduce domestic fuel consumption.
Prabowo said Indonesia must take proactive steps to anticipate the economic fallout from the conflict.
“In the sense, we must save the consumption of fuel oil,” Prabowo said during a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Friday, March 13, 2026.
