TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) confirmed that an investigation into the attack that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian personnel in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is underway, and the results will be announced soon.
UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized that the attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers was unacceptable and must be held accountable.
"Investigations by us are under way, and despite the challenging situation on the ground, we should be able to update you with those results as soon as possible," Dujarric said at a press conference at UN Headquarters on Wednesday, April 1st local time, according to an official statement monitored in Jakarta on Thursday.
He acknowledged that while the process takes time, technical experts are currently examining physical evidence at the scene and communicating with relevant parties.
Dujarric also noted that investigators' efforts to reach the scene in a timely manner were hampered by the need to defuse tensions with the relevant parties.
Nevertheless, he assured that the UN remains committed to obtaining the true facts regarding the incident.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix emphasized that his office continues to monitor the situation on the ground for the safety and security of personnel, Dujarric said.
This is all the more important given that UNIFIL personnel reported "a large explosion and demolition in the village of Naqoura near UNIFIL Headquarters" on April 1.
UNIFIL also recorded 62 airspace violations on March 31 amid heightened Israeli military activity, as well as rocket launches toward Israel and Israeli personnel in Lebanon, he said.
An Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper, Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon, was killed by artillery fire near the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent's position near Adchit Al Qusayr, southern Lebanon, on Sunday (March 29).
The following day, Monday (March 30), Indonesia lost two more UNIFIL personnel when the troop convoy they were escorting was attacked. The two personnel who died in the attack were Captain (Inf) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan.
