TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers' Unions (KSPSI), Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat, has been appointed by President Prabowo Subianto as the Minister of Environment in the Red and White Cabinet, replacing Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
Born in February 1968 in Bandung, West Java, Jumhur Hidayat is a veteran activist who has long championed labor and workers' rights. He initially studied Engineering Physics at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
He later continued his academic pursuits at the National University before earning a Master's degree in Sociology from the University of Indonesia.
In January 2007, he was appointed Head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) by Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, serving until March 11, 2014. BNP2TKI has since been restructured into the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers.
Jumhur is also an author of several books, including Jujur Terhadap Habibie (1999), Bumiputera Menggugat, and Manifesto Tenaga Ketiga (2002).
Throughout his career, he has received various accolades, including the Soegeng Sarjadi Award for Good Governance in 2011.
