TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spain secured a spot in the round of 16 for the 2026 World Cup after crushing Austria 3-0 in the round of 32 match held at the Los Angeles Stadium in the United States on Friday, Indonesian time.
As ANTARA reported, Mikel Oyarzabal was the hero of La Furia Roja's victory by scoring two goals (a brace), with the other goal scored by Pedro Porro. This convincing victory takes Spain into the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Portugal vs. Croatia duel.
Meanwhile, Austria had to end its campaign after being eliminated in the first knockout phase.
Spain immediately took control of the game from the start. The first chance came in the second minute when Lamine Yamal fired a shot from outside the penalty area, but Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager was able to parry it.
Schlager again came to Austria's rescue after denying Oyarzabal a golden opportunity. However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 36th minute. Taking advantage of Cucurella's cutback from the left, Oyarzabal finished with one touch in the penalty box to put Spain 1-0 up.
Just before half-time, Spain nearly doubled their lead through Alex Baena's free-kick which hit the crossbar. Yamal pounced on the rebound in the penalty area, but Schlager denied him again with an impressive display. The first half ended with Spain leading 1-0.
Spain continued to dominate the second half. Oyarzabal threatened with a header from a corner kick, but it was off target. Austria attempted a comeback in the 61st minute through a header from Sasa Kalajdzic, but the ball sailed just wide of Unai Simon's goal.
Spain finally extended their lead in the 66th minute. Pedro Porro headed in Baena's precise cross to make it 2-0.
Yamal nearly got on the scoresheet in stoppage time, but his shot was cleared off the line by an Austrian defender.
Oyarzabal then capped Spain's victory in the 89th minute. He again converted Cucurella's pass to score his second goal, sealing a resounding 3-0 victory that sent La Furia Roja into the round of 16.
