TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Saddam Husein, wearing a sarong and a black cap, stepped down from the RX-King motorcycle he rode. The student of the Baabussalam Al-Amin Islamic boarding school then entered a room and walked down a wooden staircase toward the turbine chamber of the microhydro power plant. Not long after, Muhammad Zein Fanani, his fellow student, followed.
At the bottom of the bunker-like room stood a yellow turbine about 5 meters long. The turbine was equipped with a dynamo with a capacity of 10,000 amperes. Saddam switched on the flashlight strapped to his head, then pumped the turbine for about 30 seconds. Water began flowing through the turbine, and the lights that illuminate the room flickered on.
Every afternoon at around 5pm, students of Baabussalam Al-Amin, located in Toba village, Sekampung Udik, East Lampung, Lampung, take turns activating the turbine. The duty officers are selected from senior students. Besides carrying out this daily routine, the students are responsible for maintaining and cleaning the turbine and the area around the lake every Friday.
The generator supplies electricity for the 2-hectare pesantren (Islamic boarding school) complex. The turbine runs from evening until morning. During the daytime, electricity needs are supplied by the state electricity company PLN.
