TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - This year, the FIFA World Cup host duties are shared by three nations: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The shared-host model was primarily introduced to accommodate the tournament’s major expansion to 48 teams, resulting in a record 104 matches that make it difficult for a single nation to stage.
Even so, becoming a FIFA World Cup host is far from straightforward. As Visual Capitalist noted, FIFA carefully evaluates each bid based on stadium infrastructure, transportation, accommodation, security, financial guarantees, and sustainability. Since 1930, only 19 countries have had the honor of hosting the FIFA World Cup.
Among this year’s host nations, Mexico is making history as the first country to become a FIFA World Cup host for a third time. Before co-hosting the 2026 edition, it previously staged the tournament in 1970 and 1986. The iconic Azteca Stadium is setting a record as the first venue to be featured in three World Cup tournaments.
Meanwhile, Canada is celebrating its debut as a FIFA World Cup host, with matches taking place in Vancouver and Toronto. This is the first time the United States has hosted the tournament since 1994.
Looking ahead, the multi-country model is set to continue. According to FOX Sports, the 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, while Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each stage commemorative opening matches to mark the tournament's 100th anniversary.
