TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - With only months to go, the global sporting stage will turn its attention to the arrival of the 2026 World Cup. Deemed the largest edition in history, the tournament will feature new host countries, an expanded pool of teams and matches, and notably, a set of new rules recently approved by FIFA.
Aimed at curbing time-wasting, these regulations are expected to reshape the rhythm of matches. As noted by Yahoo! Sports, one of the most defining changes lies in stricter substitution rules.
The update ensures that substituted players have a maximum of only 10 seconds to leave the pitch. Failure to comply will result in the incoming player being forced to wait one minute before entering, temporarily leaving the team a player short.
Another rule targeting stricter timing applies to throw-ins. Players will have just five seconds to restart play, with any delay resulting in a loss of possession.
As for injuries, Marca reported that the new World Cup rules will take a firmer approach by requiring players who receive treatment on the pitch to remain off the field for at least one minute before returning. This measure is designed to reduce unnecessary stoppages that disrupt the flow of the game.
The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system, long one of the most debated innovations in football, will also see expanded authority. At the 2026 World Cup, it will take on a greater role, including reviewing second yellow card incidents and intervening in corner kick decisions, though only in cases deemed to involve “a clear and obvious error.”
