TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government has expanded the coverage of the Kartu Jakarta Mahasiswa Unggul (KJMU) scholarship. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the scholarship now applies not only to undergraduate (S1) education but also extends to master's (S2) and doctoral (S3) levels.

"The Kartu Jakarta Mahasiswa Unggul used to only apply to S1. Now, I say it must reach S3," Pramono said in an interview with Tempo at the Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

According to Pramono, this policy is the Jakarta government's effort to strengthen access to higher education for residents while also breaking the cycle of misfortune in families through education.

He believes that education is the most effective tool to break the cycle of poverty. Pramono cited his personal experience as evidence that access to education can transform a person's social conditions.

Pramono shared that he came from a family of teachers with seven siblings. Given their financial condition at the time, it was nearly impossible for his parents to afford his college education.

However, thanks to a scholarship, Pramono was able to attend a prestigious university like the Bandung Institute of Technology, where he graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering. "That's why I am convinced that education is the key to breaking the cycle of misfortune within a family," he said.

Currently, Pramono mentioned that the number of KJMU scholarship recipients has reached 15,920 students. Through the expansion of the program to include S2 and S3 levels, the government hopes more Jakarta residents can pursue higher education without financial constraints.

Additionally, the Jakarta government is preparing a new scholarship program called the Jakarta Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP) assistance, with a budget of Rp100 billion. The program is targeted to commence in 2027 by sending at least 75 Jakarta students to pursue education abroad.

Pramono explained that this program will be carried out in collaboration with the central LPDP. The program management will still be carried out by the central LPDP, while the Jakarta provincial government will determine the scholarship recipients. "The managerial aspect will remain with the central LPDP, but the placement and beneficiaries will be determined by Jakarta," he stated.
