TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, announced that the activity status of Mount Anak Krakatau has been elevated to Siaga (Alert) or Level III. "Based on a comprehensive analysis and evaluation, the activity level of the Anak Krakatau volcano has been raised from Level II (Caution) to Level III (Alert), effective from July 2, 2026, at 4:30 PM WIB," she said, as quoted from her official statement on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The Geological Agency has designated a hazard zone within a 3-kilometer radius of the active crater. "The public surrounding Mount Anak Krakatau, alongside visitors, tourists, and climbers, are strictly barred from entering or engaging in any activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of the mountain's activity, and they are urged to heighten vigilance against the threats of pyroclastic flows, lava, flying volcanic rocks, and heavy ashfall," she emphasized.

Geological Agency observation data from the Sentinel Satellite since June 1, 2026, initially detected the emergence of SO2 emissions and thermal anomalies. By June 10, 2026, active fire spots appeared inside Mount Anak Krakatau's crater. These warning signs were accompanied by relatively high-intensity smoke emissions from the crater and a sharp uptick in shallow volcanic earthquakes, specifically in the form of emission, hybrid, and low-frequency tremors. For instance, between June 18 and 19, 2026, the volume of emission, hybrid, and low-frequency earthquakes spiked drastically, averaging more than 50 events per day.

"While this was not accompanied by an increase in tectonic-volcanic earthquakes (Volcanic A and Volcanic B) or deformation tremors, the surge in shallow volcanic seismic activity indicates magma dynamics near the surface of the Anak Krakatau volcano," Lana explained.

The Geological Agency recorded that from June 16, 2026, to July 2, 2026, the volcano generated 740 emission earthquakes, 24 harmonic tremors, 247 low-frequency earthquakes, 520 hybrid earthquakes, 16 continuous tremors, 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes, 3 deep volcanic earthquakes, 1 local tectonic earthquake, and 5 distant tectonic earthquakes.

During the same period, tiltmeter data at the Kras and Lava 93 Stations revealed fluctuating patterns with a steady trajectory, while the Tanjung Station registered fluctuating patterns showing a low-scale inflationary trend.

Furthermore, on June 26, 2026, the intensity of emission earthquakes grew, accompanied by a surge in thin, gray volcanic ash plumes drifting west-northwest. The ash cloud was detected by satellites operated by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Darwin, Australia. The Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement (RSAM) graph generally mapped fluctuating patterns with low energy, which began showing a low-scale upward trend from June 30, 2026.

Most recently, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 2:05 p.m. Eastern Indonesian Time (WIT), Mount Anak Krakatau erupted, sending an ash column 200 meters above its peak. The reported ash plume appeared gray to black with a thick density, leaning toward the northwest. The eruption was captured on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of approximately 20 seconds.

"The public residing along the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung Provinces are urged to remain calm, not believe rumors about a Mount Anak Krakatau eruption causing a tsunami, and continue their daily routines as usual while strictly adhering to directives from the local BPBD," Lana stated.

Standing 357 meters above sea level, Mount Anak Krakatau is an active Type A volcano situated in the waters of the Sunda Strait, administratively falling within South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. Monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau is conducted continuously from two separate volcano observation posts located in Kalianda, South Lampung, Lampung Province, and Pasauran, Serang, Banten Province.
