TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned electricity firm PT PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo has assured the availability of medium-calorific coal supplies for electricity generation. He stated that the supply remains guaranteed until December 2026.

According to him, this additional volume directly bolsters grid reliability. "This certainly makes the system in Java, which we previously acknowledged experienced rolling blackouts, far more reliable now," he said during a hearing with House of Representatives Commission XII on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Darmawan noted that the incoming shipments restore stability to the power grid, particularly in Java, thereby averting the risk of rolling blackouts.

"For this July, there is an additional supply of 1.8 million tons of coal with a calorific value of 4,500 and above. Following that, from August through December, an additional supply of around 3 million tons will be secured from existing sources," Darmawan detailed.

Darmawan conceded that the power grid in Java had previously experienced rolling blackouts due to a limited supply of medium-calorific coal.

He explained that the shortfall was triggered by shifting dynamics in national coal production trends. In recent years, output has steadily shifted toward low-calorific coal, while the production of medium- and high-calorific grades has contracted.

Meanwhile, Darmawan pointed out that several power plants across the Java system are engineered to run on medium-calorific coal. To address this shortage, PLN requested an additional allocation of coal with a calorific value of 4,500 from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). This additional volume comes over and above the previously designated quotas.

"The ministry then fulfilled the request through an assignment scheme," Darmawan said.
