TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto summoned several members of his Merah Putih coalition cabinet and high-ranking state-owned enterprise officials to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Among those seen at the Palace were Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director Bobby Rasyidin, and state-owned weapons manufacturer PT Pindad President Director Sigit Puji Santosa.
The President is scheduled to chair a limited meeting today specifically to discuss a plan to provide housing for residents currently living along railway tracks.
Maruarar Sirait explained that a huge amount of state land is currently not being used for the public interest and has instead fallen under the control of outside parties. "We will take them back for the sake of the nation and the people, especially for low- and middle-income communities," said Ara, as Maruarar is familiarly known, at the Presidential Palace Complex on Monday afternoon.
He noted that the government, in coordination with PT KAI, has already conducted direct surveys of several strategic state-owned plots, including areas in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, and Bandung, West Java. These surveys have identified land that can be repurposed for public housing projects.
The Gerindra Party politician added that the government is finalizing a strategic plan, which includes a groundbreaking ceremony for a housing project in Bandung in the near future.
He further emphasized that many strategic lands are located alongside railway tracks and assured that these state assets will be dedicated to the public interest.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Brian Yuliarto expressed his full readiness to back the housing initiative. "We are ready to support the program through research and technology to ensure more efficient construction," Brian said.
President Prabowo had previously promised to provide decent housing for residents living on the fringes of the railway tracks in Senen, Central Jakarta, following a personal visit to the area.
In a post on his Instagram account, @Prabowo, the Head of State shared a video of his visit to the tracks in Kramat, Pasar Senen. "God willing, we will soon build decent housing for the people in that area quickly; it is my commitment to provide decent housing for the people of Indonesia," the Gerindra Party Chair wrote on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
