TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has extended an official invitation to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to visit Indonesia. Prabowo made the gesture while meeting Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
In a joint press statement with Takaichi, Prabowo expressed his gratitude for the warm reception the Indonesian delegation received in Japan. "The relationship between Japan and Indonesia has indeed been long-standing and very good," Prabowo noted, as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat.
During the occasion, Prabowo invited Takaichi to make a reciprocal visit to Jakarta. "Once again, I feel very honored by the government and the people of Japan, and I would like to officially invite Her Excellency, the Prime Minister of Japan, Her Excellency Takaichi Sanae, to visit Indonesia. We will also warmly welcome her," he stated.
Prabowo and Takaichi discussed a wide range of bilateral collaborations during their meeting at Akasaka Palace. Beyond investment opportunities, the two leaders also touched upon cooperation in the energy, defense, and technology sectors.
Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for Japan's consistent support of Indonesia's economic development. "We are very grateful that many of our youth have been given the opportunity to study in Japan across various fields, and many of our workers have also been allowed to intern in Japan," said the Gerindra Party chief patron.
Prior to the session at Akasaka Palace, Prabowo visited the Imperial Palace of Japan on Monday, March 30. There, he met with Emperor Naruhito and Crown Prince Fumihito at the historic Tokyo residence.
Furthermore, Prabowo participated in a high-level business forum in Tokyo alongside both Indonesian and Japanese entrepreneurs. The forum was organized through a collaboration between the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Keidanren, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).
