TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Three active volcanoes in Indonesia, Mount Ibu, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, and Mount Semeru, erupted in succession on Tuesday evening, according to the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Data published on the Geological Agency’s official website on Tuesday evening showed that Mount Ibu in West Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted three times over several hours.

The first eruption was recorded at 8:36 p.m. local time (WIT), sending an ash column 700 meters above the summit. A second eruption occurred at 8:58 p.m., with an ash column reaching 500 meters.

Mount Ibu erupted again at 11:11 p.m., sending a white-to-gray ash column 600 meters above the summit. The ash plume drifted northeast and east.

The Geological Agency has classified Mount Ibu’s volcanic activity at Level II, or Alert.

Meanwhile, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, erupted at 9:09 p.m. local time (WITA).

The eruption produced a thick gray ash column rising 300 meters above the summit and drifting west and northwest. The eruption was recorded with a maximum seismogram amplitude of 11 millimeters and lasted 109 seconds.

The volcano is currently at Level III, or Alert.

Around the same time, Mount Semeru in East Java erupted at 8:33 p.m. local time (WIB).

The eruption could not be visually observed because of fog, but Mount Semeru’s monitoring officers recorded the eruption tremor on a seismograph, with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 235 seconds.

Mount Semeru is currently at Level III, or Alert. Authorities have advised residents and visitors not to conduct any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the summit or eruption center.

Beyond that area, people are also prohibited from carrying out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan because of the potential for hot clouds and lava flows to expand as far as 17 kilometers from the summit.

Authorities have also prohibited activities within a 5-kilometer radius of Mount Semeru’s crater or summit because of the risk of incandescent rock being ejected during eruptions.
