US Envoys Arrive in Qatar With State of Iran Talks Unclear

1 day ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior United States (US) envoys arrived in Qatar on Monday for consultations with regional mediators as uncertainty continues to surround the next phase of negotiations between Washington and Tehran despite a recent agreement to halt hostilities.

The visit comes after the United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing tensions following their latest military flare-up. However, both sides have offered conflicting accounts regarding whether further negotiations are imminent.

According to Qatar's Foreign Ministry, as reported by DW, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani reaffirmed Doha's commitment to facilitating dialogue and supporting all negotiation tracks stemming from the US-Iran memorandum of understanding during a meeting with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

The officials discussed recent developments in the diplomatic process, while Qatar reiterated that no high-level meetings or direct talks between US and Iranian representatives are currently scheduled.

The absence of a confirmed meeting contrasts with comments made earlier by President Donald Trump, who said Iran had requested new negotiations. Tehran has rejected that claim, with Iran's Foreign Ministry stating that no talks are planned in the coming days.

As reported by Reuters, Qatar continues to position itself as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran as efforts to preserve the fragile agreement continue.

Meanwhile, Iran's chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said Tehran would not participate in further negotiations until the United States fulfills its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.

"We are pursuing dialogue, but if the dialogue is not implemented, we are also prepared for war and will respond accordingly," Qalibaf said during an interview with Iranian state television.

Qalibaf also emphasized Iran's position regarding the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that Tehran shares sovereignty over the strategic waterway with Oman and would never compromise on its rights.

He said free passage through the strait under the memorandum would apply only for 60 days, while maintaining that Iran retains authority over future arrangements.

The statement differs from the position of the Trump administration, which has consistently maintained that international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz should remain free of charges.

Over the weekend, Trump accused Iran of violating the preliminary terms of the agreement and warned that the United States could "be forced to militarily complete the job" if Tehran failed to comply.

Qalibaf also claimed Iran has exported more than 40 million barrels of oil since the maritime blockade ended, adding that the country is now selling crude at prices roughly 20 percent higher than before.

The renewed diplomatic activity comes as international attention remains focused on stability in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes, with several governments, including Germany, calling for safe and unrestricted navigation through the waterway.
