TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and United Arab Emirates National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz during a phone call amid a potential Iran-Oman maritime shipping agreement, according to the US State Department.
"The two discussed a number of regional security issues, including Lebanon, as well as continued U.S.-UAE coordination to hold Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable for ongoing attacks," said US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
"Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz," Pigott added.
No further details regarding the discussion were made available.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei previously stated that Iran and Oman had established an agreement on a navigational map for the strategic waterway.
Earlier, when questioned about negotiations between Muscat and Tehran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington would strike Oman should the country act as an "obstruction".
