TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A strong earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Friday evening, June 26, 2026. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the quake at magnitude 6.6 at 07:34 PM local time.
The strongest shaking was recorded at intensity V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Kiamba, Sarangani. At this level, tremors can cause objects to move or fall inside buildings.
The earthquake was offshore and did not trigger a tsunami warning. It came weeks after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on June 8, killing 81 people and injuring more than 1,000 others. The earlier quake also generated a small tsunami that reached parts of Indonesia.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded the latest earthquake at magnitude 6.8. The tremor was felt in the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, at intensity III MMI, meaning it was felt indoors and resembled the vibration caused by a passing truck.
PHIVOLCS said the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 90 kilometers southwest of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental. Meanwhile, BMKG placed the epicenter around 196 kilometers northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands.
