TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - With the release of Toy Story 5, the spotlight shines not only on the cinematic return of Woody and Buzz Lightyear but also on the maestro behind its beautiful music, Randy Newman. The legendary, Oscar-winning composer returns for the fifth installment, marking a celebration of his 30 years of dedication to the franchise since the original film debuted in 1995.
Interestingly, Newman has hailed this fifth project as the finest working experience he has ever had with Pixar.
The Magical Touch of the Guardian of Toy Story's DNA
From the very beginning, Randy Newman's compositions, including the iconic anthem "You've Got a Friend in Me," have become an inseparable part of the adventures of Woody and friends. Toy Story 5 producer Lindsey Collins asserted that Newman's musical style has become intrinsic to their creative work.
"Randy has been a part of this journey for 30 years," Collins said in a press statement on Friday, June 19, 2026, adding that his music is part of the DNA of these films.
Collins added that Newman's encyclopedic understanding of the characters granted the production team the freedom to evoke deep nostalgia while charting entirely new territory.
For Newman himself, returning to the studio to compose the melodies for the adventures of Woody and friends offers a liberating creative space. He also praised Pixar's extraordinary track record while offering a surprising acknowledgment regarding the production process of this latest film.
"It does me good to be able to write for these films. It’s a liberating feeling for me," Newman expressed. "They’ve all been great and Toy Story 2 was especially enjoyable, but I think this was the most fun I’ve ever had doing one of those [movies]."
In Toy Story 5, the conflict revolves around the clash between technology and traditional toys. The film opens with 50 advanced Buzz Lightyear toys stranded on a remote island. According to Variety, to accompany this narrative, Newman crafted military-themed orchestrations dominated by brass, percussion, and a marine-style male choir. The choir was specifically chosen to score a getaway scene involving heavy machinery and tow trucks. Newman noted that his inspiration stemmed from the 1957 film Lucky Jim, which featured a choir singing "Ah, Lucky Jim, how I envy him."
Newman used symphonic string arrangements to capture Bonnie's emotional journey as she navigates the meaning of friendship amid her reliance on digital screens. For the new character Lilypad, Newman initially envisioned aggressive electronic music. However, its ultimate sonic identity was shaped through electronic sound effects developed directly by the film's post-production sound team.
Randy Newman's Orchestration and Taylor Swift
Director Andrew Stanton revealed that collaborating with Newman felt akin to working with a fellow screenwriter because of the composer's exceptional narrative instincts. Newman's work on the 102-minute feature plays a crucial role in heightening the emotional dynamics for viewers, particularly as the classic toys confront the onslaught of the digital era, represented by a new smart gadget character named Lilypad.
Interestingly, the musical atmosphere of Toy Story 5 is further enriched by a distinct cross-generational collaboration. In addition to Newman's original score, the film features a new theme song titled "I Knew It, I Knew You," written and performed by Taylor Swift alongside producer Jack Antonoff. The country-themed track was created specifically to score the character development of the cowgirl, Jessie.
The fusion of Randy Newman's classical symphonic expertise and Taylor Swift's emotional melodic style successfully creates a unique sonic landscape, ready to immerse audiences in the warm, comedic conflicts typical of Pixar.
In a video uploaded to her personal Instagram account, Taylor Swift shared that the track was written in less than a single day. "At 11am went to go see Toy Story 5. Got so inspired, got the songwriters zoomies. Went home and wrote the end credits song for Toy Story 5. We have now produced it. I’m doing vocals," Swift said. "It’s 6:57pm, in 2 hours, Bob Iger and Tom from Pixar are coming to hear it. I think this is one of the most fun days of my life."
