Iran, Oman Hold First Joint Committee Meeting on Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran and Oman have held the first meeting of the joint committee for the Strait of Hormuz in Muscat, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kasem Gharibabadi said on Monday.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on June 23 that Iran and Oman had agreed to form a joint committee to facilitate dialogue regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

"During the trip to Muscat, the first meeting of the Hormuz Joint Committee was held with Abdulaziz Al-Hinai, Oman’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. While reviewing current issues related to the Strait, we exchanged views on the future management of the Strait within the framework of paragraph five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the sovereign rights of coastal states," Gharibabadi said via social media X, as quoted by ANTARA.

In mid-June, Iranian authorities said that a new order in the Strait of Hormuz was being created, with the process taking place in coordination with Oman.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the Strait of Hormuz has been open to free navigation for years. However, he added that the situation in the sea lane will never be the same again after the United States and Israel attacked Iran.

Iranian authorities have stressed that they plan to charge service fees for the safe movement of ships through the sea lane, although the fees will not be in the form of fees.

On June 18, Iran signed a peace memorandum with the U.S. committing to not charge ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days.
