TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Bank Indonesia (BI) has launched the Kartu Kredit Indonesia (Indonesian Credit Card) for the retail segment and the general public. This credit card serves as an alternative for domestic deferred payment transactions.

Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia Destry Damayanti stated that the implementation of the Kartu Kredit Indonesia (KKI) provides a domestic payment instrument that is efficient, prudent, and integrated with the national payment system infrastructure. "The introduction of this domestic scheme offers broader opportunities for business players to enter the digital ecosystem and provides alternative credit facilities to support public consumption," said Destry, as quoted by Antara on Monday, August 17, 2026.

Previously, the Kartu Kredit Indonesia was issued solely for the government sector—specifically for central and regional government work units—to facilitate government expenditure transactions. Now, the KKI is available for use by individuals and corporations, supporting both conventional and Sharia-compliant services, depending on the specific products offered by the issuing payment service providers (PJP).

The KKI was developed by the central bank in collaboration with the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI). Both parties are supported by the Indonesian Credit Card Association (AKKI), payment service providers (PJP) acting as issuers, and payment system infrastructure providers (PIP).

Ryan Rizaldy, Head of the Payment System Policy Department at Bank Indonesia, explained that the KKI is being developed in stages. In the initial phase, the KKI is available as a digital card and can serve as a funding source for transactions within the QRIS ecosystem. This ecosystem encompasses QRIS Merchant Presented Mode (MPM), QRIS Customer Presented Mode (CPM), and QRIS TAP.

Subsequently, the KKI will undergo further phased development to facilitate online transactions—via online payment gateways—and offline transactions using physical cards. "In the initial phase, launching on August 17, 2026, the Indonesian Credit Card (KKI) is issued as a digital card to fund QRIS transactions. Transactions can be performed using either QRIS Scan or QRIS Tap," said Rizaldy.

There are seven "first-mover" payment service providers issuing the KKI: BCA, Bank Mandiri, BNI, BRI, CIMB Niaga, Permata Bank, and Bank Mega, alongside one "next-mover" provider, BSI.

Rizaldy stated that Bank Indonesia continues to promote transaction efficiency, expand access to digital payments, and provide an increasingly diverse range of domestic payment instruments. These efforts aim to offer the public greater opportunities for secure, convenient, and efficient transactions while simultaneously strengthening national economic activity.

This initiative aligns with the Indonesia Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030 and the Government's Asta Cita vision of strengthening the payment system's role as a driver of inclusive, efficient, and sustainable economic growth.
