Indonesian Police Reactivates Anti-Football Mafia Task Force

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, will reactivate the Anti-Football Mafia Task Force. Sigit stated that this step is taken to anticipate football gambling activities ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

"So, of course, we will reactivate this task force to prevent any misuse of the World Cup entertainment by certain groups to commit violations," said Sigit to journalists at the Indonesian National Police Headquarters on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

He urges the public not to engage in football gambling activities, emphasizing that the World Cup is a sporting event that prioritizes sportsmanship.

"We must not let it be tarnished by things that could damage the spirit of sportsmanship, such as the organization of clearly violating gambling, and that must be avoided," he stated.

The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 12 to July 20, 2026. For the first time in history, the international football event will be participated by 48 teams.

The Indonesian National Police plans to hold mass public viewing events for the 2026 World Cup throughout Indonesia. Sigit mentioned that the public can participate in the events held at the Indonesian National Police Headquarters, Regional Police Offices, and Sector Police across Indonesia for free.

He stated that the public viewing activities aim to provide entertainment to the public. Additionally, the police hope these activities will stimulate the local economy by involving micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). "And of course, this is also part of activities that we can incorporate for educational purposes related to public order and security," said Sigit.

In organizing the public viewing events, the Indonesian National Police collaborates with the Public Broadcasting Institution (LPP) TVRI, the official broadcaster of the 2026 World Cup in Indonesia. TVRI is set to broadcast 104 matches over six weeks.
