TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United (MU) defeated Leeds United 5-4 on penalties in a 2026/27 pre-season friendly.
The match, held at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, early Thursday morning, Western Indonesian Time, ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes before Michael Carrick's squad prevailed in the penalty shootout.
Both teams played an open game from the start, creating chances at both ends. MU took the lead in the 16th minute through Joshua Zirkzee. The goal stemmed from a move by Bryan Mbeumo, who beat Jaka Bijol in midfield. Mbeumo then drove the ball toward the Leeds penalty area before passing to Zirkzee; the Dutch forward finished the move to put MU 1-0 ahead.
Leeds United responded in the 29th minute. Dan James won possession in Manchester United's defensive third before slipping the ball to Brenden Aaronson.
Aaronson, positioned inside the penalty area, fired a shot that MU goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to stop, leveling the score at 1-1.
Both teams continued to push for a winner after the break. The Red Devils nearly scored a second goal in the dying minutes through Bruno Fernandes.
The MU captain fired a shot towards the Leeds goal, but the ball struck the crossbar. The 1-1 scoreline remained until the end of normal time, forcing the match to be decided by a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Manchester United goalkeeper Dermot Mee played a decisive role in the victory by saving Harry Wilson's spot-kick.
Matheus Cunha then put MU 2-1 up in the shootout, though Leeds managed to rally and level the score at 3-3.

However, with the score at 4-4, James Justin failed to score after his shot struck the crossbar.
Noussair Mazraoui ultimately secured the victory for Manchester United. His successful spot-kick ensured the Red Devils won the penalty shootout 5-4 against Leeds.
Manchester United have one remaining pre-season friendly before concluding their schedule: a match against AC Milan at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday evening (August 15, WIB).
