TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) began their 2026-27 campaign with another European trophy after beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday.

As reported by ESPN, the French champions, who won the UEFA Champions League last season, secured their second consecutive Super Cup title through Désiré Doué's second-half winner. The victory also made PSG the first team to win back-to-back Super Cup titles since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.

The annual curtain-raiser to the European season saw PSG take control early before Villa fought back through 17-year-old Brian Madjo. Doué then restored PSG's lead after a VAR review overturned an initial offside decision.

PSG 2-1 Aston Villa

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the 20th minute with a spectacular finish.

The Georgian forward cut inside from the left before unleashing a powerful, rising shot that flew inside the near post. Kvaratskhelia became the first Georgian player to score in the UEFA Super Cup and has now scored eight goals in his last 10 UEFA competition appearances.

Villa responded before halftime through Madjo, who was making his competitive debut for the English club.

John McGinn delivered a cross into the penalty area, which Madjo met with a volley into the roof of the net to level the score. The teenager had earlier come close to scoring when he battled past PSG defender Willian Pacho before hitting the post.

According to The Independent, Madjo and fellow teenager George Hemmings provided Villa with an attacking threat as the English side increasingly looked to counterattack.

Madjo's debut was particularly notable because his registration had been delayed by a dispute with FIFA over international transfer rules for players under 18. Villa's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was upheld last week, allowing the 17-year-old to make his competitive debut.

PSG eventually found the decisive goal in the 61st minute.

Doué ran onto Ousmane Dembélé's pass behind the Villa defense before cutting into the penalty area and curling a left-footed shot into the far corner. The assistant referee initially raised the offside flag, but a VAR review showed that Villa right-back Matty Cash had played Doué onside.

The goal was awarded, giving PSG a 2-1 lead that they held until the final whistle.

"We're very happy. Coming back from vacation, we know it's not easy, but we had things in place tonight," Doué said after the match, according to ESPN. "The main objective is to win everything this year."

PSG Begin Trophy Hunt With Super Cup Win

The Super Cup victory is PSG's first trophy of the 2026-27 season and comes after the club won five titles last season.

The French champions could add another trophy on Sunday when they face Lens in the Trophée des Champions, the annual match between the previous season's Ligue 1 and Coupe de France winners.

For coach Luis Enrique, the Super Cup victory demonstrated PSG's competitive mentality despite the players returning from their break only recently.

"We may not be in the best physical condition, but once again it's a real demonstration of our DNA," Enrique said, according to ESPN.

For Villa manager Unai Emery, meanwhile, the defeat extended an unwanted record. It was his fourth loss in the UEFA Super Cup, following previous defeats with Sevilla twice and Villarreal.

PSG's victory nevertheless underlined their growing dominance in European football, as they immediately added another continental trophy after their Champions League triumph last season.
